Karl Sebastian's original Rakers vehicle:
1934 Ford Pickup

above is a fine example of a 1964 youth's automotive expression.
The 34' V8 Pickup had a rather "high" initial purchase price of $100
cash. It
was an old country truck
and had about 1/4" thick orange and yellow paint brushed
on yearly for probably 20 years. A "fine" disk sander feathered
the paint out to the final surface. I then brushed on some zinc
chromate primer, which finished it off just right. The black trim was
brushed on, as well.
The light bar was given to me by our own Mike Hammers'
Dad. One Sunday morning, he stopped by to see what I was up to. I was
just a kid
then and was quite honored by his gift. The head lights were lifted
from an old Plymouth coupe in the Quilcene area. The front fenders
were from two junk 1-1/2-ton trucks. The original 34’ PU fenders
had a slot in them for the spare tires, but the 1-1/2-ton truck front
fenders did not. They were smooth. Note the solid-oak front bumper.
The
15" "Old Baldy" tires
I ran produced a natural lowering in front, but I could also set up
the PU with either a rake
or a power rake. If a power rake was the mode of the weekend, I would
just jack up between the front axle and the frame and put in a 10" wooden
block. When I became a member of the Rakers, I would take the block
out of the front, jack up the rear, and put the block between the
rear end and the rear spring. This block of wood allowed me to have
a 3 in 1 set up, sort of. A general lowering was no block at all.
The
exhaust system had two 12" drive tubes
and was built by our own Karl Jacobsen. Those tubes gave her a sound
bigger than the flathead
that ran her.
Where is she now? Imagine with a total investment of $300,
I ended up selling her for $250... Why?
